Personalised dog gifts that actually get used

Buying a personalised gift for someone else's dog is mostly a sizing problem wearing a nice bow. You know the dog's name and roughly how big it is, but you almost certainly do not know its neck measurement or its chest girth, and asking ruins the surprise.

Here is what works, what does not, and how to get the size right without giving the game away.

Why personalised dog gifts end up in a drawer

Three reasons, and the first is far more common than the other two. It does not fit, and personalised items usually cannot be returned. It duplicates something they already own, because every dog already has a collar and a second one has to be better rather than just newer. Or it was made for the owner rather than the dog, and anything the dog will not tolerate wearing gets taken off and never goes back on.

The gifts that survive are the ones that either adjust generously or attach to something the dog already wears.

The safest gift when you do not know the size

A collar, because the adjustment range does the work for you. The Oxford Leather Classic Collar runs from 15cm at the smallest to 62.5cm at the largest, with ten centimetres of adjustment in most sizes. Full-grain leather also ages rather than wears, marking and softening to the dog's neck over a year or two, which is what makes a collar feel like a gift instead of a replacement.

If you have a rough idea of the dog's size, these are the bands to work from.

  • Toy breeds, chihuahuas, mini dachshunds and similar: 2XS at 15 to 20cm, or XS at 19 to 26.5cm

  • Small breeds up to about 10kg: XS or Small at 22 to 32cm

  • Medium, roughly 10 to 25kg: Small or Medium at 30 to 40cm

  • Large, above 25kg: Large at 40 to 50cm, or XL to 62.5cm

The small end is where people get caught out. A chihuahua is not a Small, it is a 2XS or XS, and a collar that big will slide straight over the head.

If you want a name on it as well, our personalised range shows what can and cannot be customised.

The name goes on the harness, not the collar

This catches people out. Our personalised labels attach to harnesses, backpacks, saddle bags and the bedding range, but not to collars. So a collar with the dog's name printed on it is really two gifts: the collar, and a separate engraved tag from wherever you normally buy one.

If they already own an EzyDog harness, the labels are the better choice. They come as a set of two, one for each side, in ten colours, printed with letters and numbers, so a name, a nickname or a phone number. Because they attach with hook and loop they move between harnesses and come off before a wash, which means the gift outlives the harness it started on.

Buying the harness and the label together

If you are buying both, sizing matters again, and harnesses are less forgiving than collars. The FORMFIT Mesh Harness is the easiest of the three to get right, being lightweight mesh that suits smaller and medium dogs where something heavier would be overkill. The Express Harness is the workhorse and the one most likely to already be in the house, and the Convert is the third option. All three sit in the personalised harness range and all three take labels.

If you cannot get a measurement, buy the label and let them choose the harness, or buy the collar instead. A harness that does not fit is a return, and a personalised one cannot be returned at all.

How to get the measurement without spoiling it

Three approaches that tend to work. Ask about the harness they already own, since "what size is Milo's harness, I'm trying to work something out" is vague enough to pass. Ask whoever else walks the dog, because partners, housemates and dog walkers usually know and enjoy being in on it. Or work from the dog's weight, which is less precise but narrows the range enough for a collar, and most owners know it from vet visits.

When the label should say something other than a name

Worth knowing if the dog has a reason to need one. Our pre-printed side labels come in fourteen wordings in black and white, including Service Dog, Assistance Dog, Wheelchair Service Dog, Therapy Dog, In Training, Rescue Dog, Anxious, Nervous, Friendly, Ask To Pat and Do Not Pat, plus Blind Dog, Deaf Dog and Tripawd. For an owner who spends every walk explaining their dog to strangers, that solves a daily problem in a way a name never will.

Give yourself time, and check the spelling

Personalised labels take about two business days to process before they ship, since each set is made to order. That is not long, but add it to whatever shipping time applies and work backwards from the date you need it. And read the spelling twice before you order, because personalised items cannot be returned and a misspelled name stays misspelled.

What we would buy

If you know which harness they own, buy personalised labels. Low risk, genuinely worn, and it makes something they already use theirs. If you know nothing about sizing, buy a leather collar matched to the size bands above and let the adjustment cover the gap. If the dog needs people to behave differently around it, buy a pre-printed label, which is more useful than anything with a name on it. And if you are buying the whole setup, get the measurement first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best personalised gift for a dog?

Something that either adjusts generously or attaches to gear they already own, so a collar with a wide adjustment range or a set of labels for a harness they already have.

Can you put a dog's name on a collar?

Not with our labels, which fit harnesses rather than collars. For a collar you would want a separate engraved tag, which most pet shops make while you wait.

What size collar do I buy if I do not know the measurement?

Work from the dog's size, but watch the small end. Toy breeds like chihuahuas and mini dachshunds need a 2XS at 15 to 20cm or an XS at 19 to 26.5cm, not a Small. Up to about 10kg is usually an XS or Small, 10 to 25kg a Small or Medium, and above that a Large. Most sizes carry around ten centimetres of adjustment, so there is room for error once you are in the right band.

How long does personalisation take?

Allow two business days for processing before shipping, as each set is made to order.

Can personalised items be returned?

No, so check the spelling before ordering.

What can go on a personalised label?

Letters and numbers, so a name, a nickname or a phone number. No emojis. Shorter names are enlarged to fill the space, and since they come as a set of two you can put a name on one and a number on the other.

What if I do not know which harness they own?

Buy the collar instead, or ask whoever walks the dog. Labels are sized to the product they attach to, so the harness needs to be known.

Still not sure what to buy?

If you know the size, the personalised harness range is where the labels fit. If you do not, a collar gives you ten centimetres of room to be wrong.
